Upstate Pride in Action Director
Location: Albany
Summary: The Empire State Pride Agenda is New York’s statewide lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights and advocacy organization. Our mission is to win equality and justice for LGBT New Yorkers and our families. Through our education, organizing and advocacy programs, we work toward creating a broadly diverse alliance of LGBT people and our allies in government, communities of faith, labor, all sectors of the workforce and other social justice movements to achieve equality for LGBT New Yorkers and the broader goals of social, racial and economic justice.
The Upstate Pride in Action Director will lead the upstate Pride in Action community organizing program. This position will serve as the statewide lead for Pride in Our Union, the Pride in Action program focusing on the labor movement. The Upstate Pride in Action Director will lead organizing efforts in upstate LGBT and straight ally communities around marriage equality, safe schools for LGBT youth and non-discrimination based upon gender identity and expression. This position will also manage two Program Organizers based in Western and Central New York. The Upstate Pride in Action Director collaborates with the Downstate Pride in Action Director and reports to the Program Director.
The Upstate Pride in Action Director will:
- Provide vision and leadership, setting goals and deliverables, for the upstate community organizing which includes volunteer Community Ambassadors focused on advancing key LGBT issues and Pride in the Pulpit, Pride in Our Union and Pride in My Workplace members.
- Directly staff and coordinate the Pride in Our Union program: develop goals, strategies and tactics for union sector; recruit and train volunteers; grow the number of supportive individuals, leaders and unions; conduct public speaking and trainings; and produce program materials.
- Strengthen straight ally and people of color involvement in union-based and local organizing
- Lead, train, mentor and direct two Program Organizers, one of whom organizers the LGB and T communities around the passage of the Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act (GENDA) and coordinates the statewide GENDA Coalition
- Facilitate statewide Marriage Ambassador meetings and conference calls
- Collaborate with Director of Public Policy & Training to develop volunteer training curricula, such as Community Ambassador Trainings for Marriage, GENDA and Dignity (safe schools) activists.
- Collaborate with Downstate Director (who supervises Pride in the Pulpit and Pride in My Workplace Programs as well as the NYC and suburban organizers) to plan, implement, and evaluate Program organizing strategies and tactics; and organize constituent legislative visits in-district and in Albany at the Pride Agenda’s annual Equality & Justice Day in Albany.
- Manage participation in Pride season
Qualifications:
- Commitment to the mission of the Pride Agenda and to LGBT community, straight ally and anti-racism organizing
- Experience in program management , volunteer management and with the labor movement
- Ability to provide leadership and motivate staff; experience directing other staff
- Electoral campaign experience is preferred, but not required
- Ability to think strategically and work independently and to work as part of a leadership team in a large campaign
- Excellent listening, communication and writing skills; high degree of computer literacy (Microsoft Office, databases, internet-based organizing)
- Ability to work flexible hours that include nights and weekends; ability to travel statewide
- Fluency in Spanish is desirable, but not required

Program Organizer – New York City

The NYC Program Organizer is responsible for leading our community campaign for LGBT equality and justice in New York City, focusing on the outer boroughs and communities of color. The NYC Program Organizer reports to the Downstate Director for Pride in Action.
The NYC Program Organizer will:
- Recruit and train LGBT and straight ally volunteers as Community Ambassadors who work to build support for marriage equality, transgender civil rights and schools safe from bias-based bullying and harassment.
- Recruit and train clergy and members of communities of faith and leaders, staff and members of the labor movement to support LGBT issues and to make their congregations and unions more welcoming to LGBT people
- Lead monthly volunteer IMPACT Teams that do community education, issue advocacy, grassroots lobbying and electoral work
- Strengthen straight ally, transgender and people of color involvement in Pride Agenda campaigns.
- Organize LGBT support for selected social justice or union campaigns that build the strategic alliance between the Pride Agenda, communities of color and the labor movement.
- Represent the Pride Agenda in trainings, community meetings, forums and conferences.
- Coordinate Pride Agenda activities at Pride Parades/Festivals in NYC.

Program Organizer – Long Island

Transgender Rights Field Organizer
Location: Albany

This position is a critical component of the Pride Agenda’s campaign to pass the Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act (GENDA) in the state legislature. The Field Organizer’s primary responsibility is to build the Pride Agenda’s field outreach program in support of our statewide campaign against discrimination based on gender identity and expression (GIE). This includes directly identifying, training and mobilizing transgender and ally supporters in NYC and the Hudson Valley and supporting the GIE work of the other Field Organizers throughout the state. The Transgender Rights Field Organizer reports to the Field Director.
[Note: This position is not responsible for all transgender issue work at the Pride Agenda.]
The GIE Field Organizer will:
- Work with the Pride Agenda’s Field Director to identify NYC and Hudson Valley outreach opportunities and locally appropriate actions for the GENDA campaign
- Work with the Field Organizer and Public Policy & Education Director to develop a GENDA Advocate Training curriculum for potential volunteer activists. Conduct GENDA Advocate Trainings in NYC, Hudson Valley and Syracuse. Assist with Trainings conducted by other Field Organizers in Long Island, Rochester, Buffalo, Albany and Queens
- Continue to build a diverse GENDA Coalition; staff meetings of the GENDA Coalition; maintain listserv
- Recruit and coordinate turn-out for LGBT Equality & Justice Day to ensure strong participation by NYC and Hudson Valley GENDA supporters. Recruit constituents for legislative visits with elected officials both in-district and at Equality & Justice Day
- Work with Field Team on LGBT Pride events, including organizing volunteers, tabling and logistics. Research and attend important community events that will increase the visibility of gender identity and expression issues and LGBT equality and justice
- Work with GENDA Advocates and other Field Organizers in support of local meetings to coordinate local activities with the statewide campaign, including house parties, vigils, rallies and community canvasses
Qualifications:
- Experience in or familiarity with transgender/gender identity/gender expression issue organizing
- Excellent writing skills; strong interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to work with people
- Commitment to the mission of the Pride Agenda and to serving LGBT communities through community-based and anti-racist organizing
- Ability to work flexible hours that includes nights and weekends and travel throughout New York State
- A strategic thinker who is detail-oriented, well-organized and self-directed
- High degree of computer literacy. Should have real-world knowledge of social networking sites and be interested in developing and implementing strategies to harness the power of the internet to engage and activate people to take action around our issues

Communications Coordinator - Online Media

The Pride Agenda is looking for a smart, creative, new-media savvy and detail-oriented addition to the communications team. The Communications Coordinator will be primarily responsible for: maintaining and updating the Pride Agenda’s website; managing the day-to-day operation of the Pride Agenda’s online media tools; coordinating the OffSprung! young professionals outreach program; basic production, videography/photography and design work as needed; and generally assisting the communications team with special projects and day-to-day tasks. The position reports to the Communications Director.
Principal Duties:
- Maintain the Pride Agenda’s website, www.prideagenda.org, which includes managing the process for updating content on the website and launching new website initiatives. Will require working closely with staff across disciplines.
- Utilize constituent management system (GetActive/Convio) to send periodic e-newsletters, email messages and advocacy modules to database of supporters
- Have a good understanding of blogs, podcasts, social networking sites and other web-based sharing/networking platforms and new media technologies
- Develop and maintain relationships with bloggers and other individuals/organizations overseeing online social networks covering LGBT issues and New York State politics
- Maintain the organization’s blog and social media platforms, produce podcasts and develop ways to utilize new media tools to deepen and broaden the Pride Agenda’s outreach efforts
- Coordinate the OffSprung! young professionals outreach initiative, which will involve working with committee members and volunteers to create and execute programming and events aimed at engaging LGBT people and allies between the ages of 22 – 35
- Use of design/publication applications (i.e. Photo Shop, Quark, Final Cut, Garage Band, etc.)
- Photography and/or videography skills are helpful, but not required.
Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree with relevant experience in communications, media, public affairs or related field. You should have excellent writing skills; strong interpersonal and communication skills including the ability to multi-task and work with people. You should be detail-oriented, well-organized, self-directed, familiar with the issues that are important to the organization, computer literate and web savvy. It will be helpful to have some familiarity with HTML (or be able to learn). Knowledge of state and local politics in New York is a plus but not necessary.

Special Events and Development Intern – Fall 2008

The Special Events and Development Intern will assist with special events and fundraising. This is a fantastic opportunity to get hands-on experience working for a non-profit organization and learning the intricacies of fundraising. The internship will be from September to December (dates negotiable) for 15-30 hours a week.
The Special Events and Development Intern will:
- Assist Director of Special Events with preparation for organizational fundraising events, specifically our Annual Fall Dinner in October
- Assist Director of Major Gifts in various areas, including reasearching new fundraising opportunities and preparing appeals and acknowledgments
- Assist Senior Manager of Donor Relations with wide range of Direct Mail assignments
- Various data entry/management projects in Raiser’s Edge database
- General clerical and office work
Qualifications:
- Excellent attention to detail
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, especially Word and Excel
- Highly organized and able to complete tasks on time
- Superb writing and research abilities
- Interest in non-profit organizations and knowledge of LGBT issues
- Raiser’s Edge experience is a plus, but not required
Educational Requirements:
- First year of college completed or graduate student; all majors and backgrounds welcome.
Compensation: This is an unpaid internship. However, internships for school credit will be considered.
